UniFi Protect on iPhone: RTSP Stream Setup

Switch on RTSP in Protect

In the Protect web interface or the UniFi Protect app, select the camera, open its settings and look under Advanced for the RTSP section. Each quality level, High, Medium and Low, has its own switch and its own address. Turn on the ones you need; Protect shows the address next to each.

The address points at the console, not the camera. That is why it carries the console's IP and why the camera's own IP gets you nothing: Protect cameras do not serve RTSP themselves.

From rtsps:// to rtsp://

Protect offers each stream twice: encrypted with TLS and SRTP on port 7441, which is what it displays, and unencrypted on port 7447. IP Camera Viewer plays the unencrypted version, and its UniFi preset already uses port 7447.

Three changes: rtsps becomes rtsp, 7441 becomes 7447, and ?enableSrtp goes. Pasting the rtsps:// address unchanged is refused, because the app only accepts rtsp:// addresses. On your own network, unencrypted video between the console and your phone is normal; over the internet, use a VPN, which encrypts it anyway.

High, Medium or Low

High is the camera's full resolution, 4K on G4 Pro and G5 Pro models. Medium and Low are smaller copies. On an iPhone, Medium looks sharp and loads faster; in a grid of several cameras or over a VPN on mobile data, use Low. Because each level has its own stream ID, you can add the same camera twice, with Low for your group layout and High for full-screen viewing.

Treat the address like a password

A Protect RTSP address needs no login: anyone who has it and can reach the console on port 7447 can watch the stream. Keep the addresses private, and switch RTSP off in Protect for any stream you no longer use. If your cameras or console sit on a separate VLAN, the firewall rules that protect them also decide whether your phone can reach port 7447.

Watching away from home

UniFi gateways include VPN servers, including WireGuard and Teleport, so remote viewing is straightforward: connect the iPhone to your UniFi network over the VPN, then open the camera in IP Camera Viewer as you would at home. The app has no cloud relay of its own, which is why the VPN is needed.

Troubleshooting

• The app refuses the address: it still starts with rtsps://. Convert it as shown above.
• Stream Not Found: the port is still 7441, ?enableSrtp is still attached, or the stream ID was mistyped. Copy it again from Protect.
• Camera Unreachable: you used the camera's IP instead of the console's, or a firewall rule between VLANs blocks port 7447.
• Worked yesterday, not today: RTSP was switched off in Protect, or the camera was re-adopted and its stream ID changed. Switch RTSP on again and copy the address Protect shows now.
