What to check before you choose
A strong IP camera viewer should cover the basics without forcing you into another subscription or vendor-specific workflow.
Connection details
RTSP URL format: rtsp://username:password@camera-ip:554/cam/realmonitor?channel=1&subtype=0
RTSP URL format (sub): rtsp://username:password@camera-ip:554/cam/realmonitor?channel=1&subtype=1
Default credentials: admin / password set on first login
Manufacturer app: Amcrest View (manufacturer)
Notes: Amcrest hardware is rebadged Dahua, so the RTSP path is identical: /cam/realmonitor?channel=1&subtype=0. Newer firmware no longer ships with a default password and forces you to set one on first login. ONVIF is enabled by default.
Why IP Camera Viewer & Monitor fits
For a “best” recommendation, the practical answer is the app that works quickly every day and does not add extra friction. On iPhone, fast setup, low-latency playback, and a clean mobile interface matter most.
Frequently asked questions
What is the RTSP URL for Amcrest cameras?
Amcrest is rebadged Dahua hardware, so the RTSP scheme is the same: rtsp://username:password@camera-ip:554/cam/realmonitor?channel=1&subtype=0 for the main stream and subtype=1 for the sub-stream.
How do I view an Amcrest camera on iPhone without Amcrest View?
Use any RTSP-capable iOS viewer. Add the camera, paste the Amcrest RTSP URL, and the live feed plays over your local Wi-Fi. There's no Amcrest Cloud account required, and latency is far lower than the Amcrest View app's P2P pathway.
Do Amcrest cameras support ONVIF?
Yes. ONVIF is enabled by default on Amcrest cameras. Add the camera by IP in an ONVIF-capable iPhone viewer and the app will discover both main and sub streams without you having to type the RTSP URL by hand.
Are Amcrest cameras compatible with Dahua RTSP paths?
Yes. Because Amcrest hardware is built on Dahua firmware, every /cam/realmonitor URL that works on a Dahua camera works on an Amcrest. Tools and viewers documented for Dahua RTSP work on Amcrest unchanged.
Why won't my Amcrest camera connect after I changed the password?
Newer Amcrest firmware requires the RTSP user to have explicit live-view permission. Open the web UI, go to Setup → System → Account, and confirm the user has Live and Replay rights. Also URL-encode any special characters in the password inside the RTSP URL.
Can I view Amcrest cameras over the internet from iPhone?
For local Wi-Fi viewing, an RTSP iPhone viewer is the simplest option. For remote access without Amcrest Cloud, run a VPN back to your home network (WireGuard or Tailscale) and connect the iPhone viewer to the camera's LAN IP through the tunnel. That keeps the stream end-to-end private.
